A Girl's Life in the Army

April 15, 2016

At this months meeting we learnt about a Girls Life in the Army. Gillian Cane our speaker was one of the first intake of Women to go through the Sandhurst experience. We heard about her first military exercise 3 nights camping in January 1986, when the weather was the coldest on record and snow was on the ground for months. The girls were horrified to learn on their return from their ordeal that the men's equivalent exercise had been cancelled due to the severity of the weather. Gillian was later to be the first female officer in the Royal Green Jackets. Women have a non combative role in the Army and Gillian's role was mainly in training and discipline. Gillian was a lively and interesting speaker who now has a very different role at The Bodlean Library.
